Over the past few weeks we have been very busy getting to grips with creating our blogs, adding some blog posts, participating in forum discussions and using social software to support our learning.
We have looked at contemporary culture and created some fabulous posters showing aspects of Scottish culture (photographs to follow!)
We carried out a debate on how we think social media might have affected the Holocaust if it had existed in the 1930's on the Moodle forum.
Last week we examined and discussed how social media is impacting on business and prepared a statement looking at positive and negative impacts. This week students will post this to their own blogs.
My thoughts on this are that businesses are making use of social media to communicate effectively with their customers - an example is setting up a Facebook page and posting news about products, special offers and customer reviews. Customers are invited to Like and connect with the page which means they will recieve updates directly to their Facebook page. Example: McDonalds Official Facebook. This seems a very positive way for a business to advertise and promote themselves.
However, there are negative aspects in social media for business - an unhappy customer may send a tweet complaining about bad service which will be seen by others! Some businesses employ staff to keep a weather eye for negative publicity being posted about them in social media and try to respond and put their side of the story. I found this article 'Woman leaves bad online review' which illustrates this.
